See You Next Tuesday 2024 Wrapped
The team’s favourite films and albums of 2024
While Spotify wrapped—with its terrible AI graphics, wrongly collected data, and overall lack of flair—was an unmitigated disaster, it is still possible for real human beings to create a graphically satisfying recap of 2024 in media. So, I asked everyone on our wonderful team what their favourite albums and films of 2024 have been, and it enlightened me with new perspectives on projects I was familiar with, works I hadn’t even heard of, and insight into the cultural souls of my coworkers. Our choices are now available to you to perhaps broaden your own horizons, or just to judge us from afar.

Challengers
It changed lives. I look at churros a bit differently now. Luca Guadagnino is the master of yearning–a personal role model, if you will. I left the theatre blushing like a schoolgirl before spending the next 6 months tweeting about my obsession with it.
Doechii, Alligator Bites Never Heal
Go watch her tiny desk concert and you’ll understand.
Christine Bradshaw
Monkey Man
I normally hate action/superhero movies with a passion, but this film is a big exception. The pacing, the soundtrack, and the casting were all perfect (and Dev Patel is also very hot, sue me!). I’m also super inspired by the amount of struggle and grit it took to actually get this film made and sold. It was an excellent directorial debut by Patel, and I’m so excited to see more from him behind the camera, as well as in front of it.
Billie Eilish, Hit me Hard and Soft
Ever since seeing Billie live at Osheaga in 2023, I've become a huge fan of hers, and this album definitely lived up to my expectations. Every track is a hit, but if I had to choose a favourite it would definitely be “WILDFLOWER” (shout out queen DLC).

Anora
While I also loved The Substance and Wicked, as someone who isn’t the biggest movie buff, I found myself thoroughly enjoying every minute of Anora. I mean, Ivy Wolk is in it! Hello? What’s not to like? J’adora.
Ariana Grande, Eternal Sunshine
This is my album of the year–the artistic growth from her last album, Positions (2020), is insane. With Eternal Sunshine, the more streamlined production shows off Ariana Grande’s generational singing chops, swapping her signature “yuh” adlib for crisp and divine pop vocals. From “yes, and?” to “ordinary things”, Eternal Sunshine shows off just how versatile Ariana can be.

My Old Ass
Maybe it was the bisexual awakening, the Ontarioness of it all, the mention of Little Women, or the peak 2006 Nelly Furtado within the first three and a half minutes, but this movie hit me unbelievably close to home. Megan Park wrote and directed what was such an intimate, personal, and contemporary coming of age film. It was hilarious, it made me cry uncontrollably, there was a shroom-induced Justin Bieber concert hallucination, and it was a reminder that love and pain are inextricably linked, and the latter does not mean you should ever deprive yourself of the former, because before you know it all that wonderful time for falling hopelessly, and even stupidly, in love is gone. Also, call your mom!
Wunderhorse, Midas
I’ve never found a male vocalist whose voice conveys as much emotion as Jacob Slater’s, AKA the mind behind Wunderhorse. Slater released Wunderhorse’s first album, the equally outstanding Cub (2022), as a solo project, but this album is a collaborative effort with the rest of the band under the same name. Slater’s bittersweet vocals and lyricism convey everything from frustrated agony to reflective, melancholic yearning, as they thunder over the most heart-wrenching, echoing guitar melodies to create an LP unlike any alternative music efforts of recent years. It’s just over a month until I see them in concert, and I’m counting the days until I get to cry to “Arizona” live and not just alone in my room.

The Substance
The Substance was my favorite movie in 2024. I love how it critiques beauty standards and the male gaze, especially through the characters of the unnamed producer and the neighbour. In a world where women are expected to always look youthful and perfect, the film metaphorizes cosmetic procedures women (especially those in the public eye) feel pressured to undergo as they age and hyperbolizes the body horror-like effects that they actually entail. I also loved the cinematography and the use of colour–the way writer-director Coralie Fargeat pays homage to so many well-known films is brilliant, and the purposeful use of colour motifs throughout adds so much depth to the film.
KAYTRANADA, Timeless
Since seeing KAYTRANADA open for The Weeknd at his Toronto concert and partying with him at Apt200, my appreciation for his music has grown deeply. I love how unique and catchy his style is, and his 2024 album Timeless is no exception

Blitz
Set in London during the Blitz, a bombing campaign conducted on the United Kingdom by the Germans in World War II, Blitz is the story of nine-year-old George, who is evacuated to the countryside by his mother, Rita, to escape the bombings. Saoirse Ronan stars in the film as Rita, and is phenomenal as always. A film that explores mother-son love in the face of adversity, this historical drama was the best movie of the year for me.
Fred again.., Ten Days
UK DJ and producer Fred again.. (aka Fred Gibson) possesses undeniable talent, and his 2024 album Ten Days bottles it all into one incredible project. In my opinion this album is one of a kind and is truly for everyone.

Wicked
My favourite movie of the year was definitely Wicked. Typically, I’m not one to be able to sit through a movie of any kind, let alone with a 2 hour and 20 minute run time like this one, but Wicked truly lived up to all of my expectations. Watching it in theatres brought out my inner child, and I loved every second of it!
Taylor Swift, The Tortured Poet’s Department
With my whole chest, it’s TTPD.
Annam Okutinyang
The Substance
What I loved most about The Substance was its aesthetic and the eerie, immersive cinematography that made the story even more engaging. A lot of films that try to tackle the harm of beauty standards fall flat for me because they don’t dig deep enough, but this one really stuck with me long after watching.
Megan Thee Stallion, MEGAN
As a fan of Megan Thee Stallion since 2018, MEGAN feels like the perfect reflection of her growth as an artist. She’s taken the best elements of her previous work and brought them together into one standout album. Her flow and wordplay are as sharp as ever, and tracks like “Paper Together”, “B.A.S.”, and “Miami Blue" are my personal favourites that highlight her versatility and energy. It’s an album that truly represents everything I admire about Megan.
